History:
In the beginning there were three students who knew they could teach elementary students in grades 3-5 to understand the concept of fractions.  But how were they going to do this?  How could they teach these younger students something they sometimes had a hard time doing themselves?  Then someone had a brilliant idea--write a children's book.  They knew they had to work together to make this happen and they were going to need help, because just three people couldn't, or shouldn't, teach all the different concepts that go with learning about fractions.  They need your help.

Mission:
Your mission, should you decide to accept it, and you should, is to form a team of three.  Each of you will hold three jobs.  All of you will be teachers and editors; however, individually you should decide your mission specialty: Mathematician, Author, Illustrator.  Together you will write and illustrate a 10-15 page book (using any graphics program, for example; Printmaster, Storybook Weaver) to teach one of the following concepts to a child in grades 3-5.  You should choose one of these concepts to write your book about - clearing your choice with your team leader (teacher) before you begin.

  1.  Understanding fractions, congruent fractions, and improper fractions
  2.  Adding and subtracting fractions with like-denominators
  3.  Adding and subtracting fractions with unlike-denominators
  4.  Multiplying 2 fractions
  5.  Multiplying a fraction with a whole number
  6.  Dividing 2 fractions
  7.  Dividing a fraction with a whole number
  8.  Finding the Least Common Denominator (LCD)

Using the internet, reinforce your own knowledge about the concept, find ideas for your book, and find ideas on how to write books for children.

In addition, you will teach your concept to the whole team (class).

Together:
Discuss concept
Brainstorm ideas
Title your book

Your job is to make sure you understand your concept and can teach it to others in such a way as to be clearly understood.  You MUST work closely with the others in your group to make sure they understand the concept and you know what they are doing.

Your job is to write the text of your book.  Keep it simple; strive for clarity and conciseness.  Remember your audience is children in grades 3-5.  You want to write so that they can understand the concept.  Avoid complex mathematical terms.  Try to set a tone of "this is easy."  Your voice should be one that will appeal to children.

Make sure you work closely with the mathematician and illustrator to be sure you understand the concept you are writing about. The illustrator will need to know what he/she should do to create a visual representation of your story.

Your job is to create the visual representations that will help a child easily understand the written text.  Your visuals should show the concept in action.  Use whatever graphics program with which  you feel comfortable.  Don't forget to create a cover for your book.

Make sure you work closely with the mathematician and author to be sure you understand the concept you are illustrating. The author will need to understand what you are doing to make sure your visual representation accurately depicts his/her story.

Congratulations! You have successfully completed the first stage of your mission.  Now go out and write your book!  Then, just so we at headquarters will know that you have successfully completed your entire mission, you will teach the team (class) your fraction concept.  At the conclusion of all teaching presentations, you and the entire team will know how to work with fractions.  Good Luck!
